Scary Hindi Movies That Give You Chills in 2025

Scary Hindi films that will give you chills. From demonic possession to haunted houses, this list covers it all!

No matter your preferred horror genre, whether melodramatic or darkly comic, Bollywood horror movie fans have got you covered with this thrilling list ranked by Ranker users like you! From old classics to cutting-edge offerings – everything here will send chills down your spine.

Lupt

Lupt (meaning vanish) is a film about the dangers of ambition. The narrative begins with Harsh, an ambitious businessman who neglects his family; Tanu (an asthmatic daughter of Harsh’s), is haunted by ghosts who warn that without changes he will die soon enough. Harsh blames stress for his poor behaviour but plans a vacation trip as soon as he returns home from his trip.

Prabhuraj has used jump cuts and high pitched, unsettling music to generate suspense in this movie, yet the resultant drama remains predictable and boring to watch. Additionally, Jaaved Jaaferi overacts in some scenes and it feels forced upon him.

Lupt is still an enjoyable horror flick despite its flaws. There are no bloody scenes or explicit sexual content; and Niki Walia, Vijay Raaz and Yashpal Sharma deliver some stellar performances in it. Overall it makes an enjoyable bollywood horror experience; but if horror genre is not your cup of tea it should probably be avoided.

Gaslight

Since MeToo’s advent, the term “gaslighting” has entered our vernacular. This manipulation technique causes victims to question their sanity by dimming lamps or making false accusations against them. Abusers use this tactic frequently against victims.

Gaslight, directed by George Cukor and featuring Paula as its central character, is an immersive depiction of psychological torture. She inherits a mansion from her aunt and believes she has gone insane; Gregory tries to convince her otherwise and hires a maid to care for his business when he’s away at night.

The movie is unnecessarily slow paced and its actors did an awful job of portraying their roles. Sara Ali Khan overacts while Vikrant Massey just plain fails. Chitrangda did better but there was still room for improvement from both actors. Although director Pawan Kirpalani used some well-known actresses, they weren’t given justice due to Pawan Kirpalani not using their talents properly and overall it was just a waste of my time; I had to turn up my phone’s brightness just so I could see anything on the screen!

Bulbbul

Bulbbul is an innovative horror film by Anvita Dutt. Crafted as an engagingly contemporary fable, Tripti Dimri’s performance as Bulbul is mesmerising and moving. Dutt’s direction removes misogynist and patriarchal overtones of traditional chudail stories while providing a rich, dark, lyrical tale that both disturbs and haunts its audience.

Set in 1800s Bengal Presidency, this movie begins with a child marriage ceremony wherein young Bulbbul is forced into her older husband Indranil’s arms at age 13. Over time we come to realize that men in Bulbbul’s village are being murdered by an evil witch known as Chudail who appears at every turn and threatens her villager’s safety.

This movie is an intense drama that does not shy away from depicting the violence and cruelty of sexism against women. Additionally, it challenges gendered binaries by exploring monstrous femininity – especially through Kaali-Maa’s complex persona which mediates between order/disorder and abjection/purity and makes her both scary and seductive.

Kakuda

After the success of Stree, Hindi horror movies took on a fresh approach that blended comedy, scares, and message without resorting to traditional horrex genre. Munjya and Bhediya followed suit, but any successful formula can lead to films trying to copy its formula and failing miserably; Kakuda is such a film; its story relies too heavily on folklore while trying to sell its main character’s search for respect in an unconvincing manner.

Aditya Sarpotdar directed this movie featuring Sonakshi Sinha, Riteish Deshmukh and Saqib Saleem as its leads. The story follows a village that is haunted by Kakuda, an evil dwarf spirit who visits every home every Tuesday at 7:15 pm demanding that every small door in each household open or risk getting kicked and cursed into developing a hump and dying within 13 days. While Aasif Khan as Sunny’s sidekick added moments of humor throughout, much of his cast was wasted in what ultimately proved an uninspired film.

Bhoot Police

Bhoot Police is the newest horror-comedy flick to hit theaters, featuring Saif Ali Khan, Arjun Kapoor, Yami Gautam and Jacqueline Fernandez as lead roles. Directed by Pavan Kirpalani (Phobia and Ragini MMS), this film also stars Jacqueline Fernandez.

Vibhooti and Chiraunji, two Tantrik ghost hunters hired by Maya to rid her tea estate in Himalayas of demons that are haunting it, agree to take up this case due to its financial incentive. Though neither believe in ghosts themselves, but accept this case due to money involved.

Bollywood Bubble notes that “the first half of this film may seem slow at first, but in its second part is really exciting. Here, where it breaks from other horror comedy movies by focusing more on ghosts than normal horror comedies – that’s where this film excels!”

Saif Ali Khan shines in this film. His dialogue delivery is both charming and humorous; creating some of the funniest scenes. Additionally, there are some relevant jokes aimed at today’s youth (one-liners on nepotism and references to go-corona-go). Unfortunately though, most of the cast are average or forgettable.

Bhediya

Bollywood has long presented films that explore queer stories. Most have focused on issues specific to queer communities – moral policing (Aligarh), coming out (Dear Dad), or living at the intersections between queerness and other marginalized identities (Margarita With a Straw). 2020’s ShubhMangalZyadaSaavdhan broke this mould by offering audiences an approachable mainstream film about two men falling in love.

Bhediya Bhool is one of the latest films that has successfully combined horror-comedy genre. Starring Varun Dhawan as a man who gets bitten by a werewolf and begins behaving like one on full moon nights, Bhediya Bhool features captivating howling entertainment, top-of-the-line visual effects and an extraordinary narrative which keeps audiences hooked until its conclusion.

Director Amar Kaushik rose to fame with the critically-acclaimed horror comedy Stree (2018). Since then he has directed films like Roohi (2021) and Phone Bhoot (2102), but none of these has achieved similar levels of success as Stree.

Bhool Bhulaiyaa & Sequel

Bhool Bhulaiya 2 is the sequel to Fazil’s 1993 Malayalam movie Manichitrathazhu that Priyadarshan adapted into Hindi as Bhool Bhulaiya in 2007. This time around, the story revolves around a woman who fakes her death so as to get her sister married off, only for Manjulika to attempt contact and try and communicate with her to set her free from their illusionary imprisonment.

Bazmee keeps many elements from his first film intact in this sequel: an expansive palatial house, black magic, the haunting title track and Shreya Ghoshal’s haunting rendition of Ami Je Tomar by Shreya Ghoshal are among them. Additionally, Rajpal Yadav’s comical Chhote Pandit and Sanjay Mishra’s comical slapstick comedy provide plenty of comic relief.

This film fails to provide the same amount of nightmare-inducing tension that its predecessor did, with generic horror and few genuine scares; too many twists leading to an uncertain conclusion; but nevertheless remains an enjoyable film due to its combination of horror and comedy.

Stree

Stree was an astonishing box office success and pioneer of horror comedy filmmaking. Taking an original approach to folklore, Stree combined thrills and laughs effortlessly – something Maddock Films producer Dinesh Vijan recently discussed at an event where he presented plans for creating his own horror universe.

With the release of Roohi, starring Rajkummar Rao and Janhvi Kapoor, audiences will again be introduced to an unusual genre within Indian cinema. Although it will undoubtedly unnerve audiences in similar ways as its predecessor, this time round may prove even more shocking!

Roohi

Roohi follows two young men from Bagadpur – Bhawra Pandey and Kattani Qureshi – who kidnap women and sell them off as brides, but these brides are possessed by spirits which threaten to take over the world. Unfortunately, the makers of Roohi don’t add much depth to its storyline with constant nods to American pop culture being too obvious an attempt at humor creation; also making the film seem too macabre for its own good.

Conclusion

Hindi horror movies are packed with thrills, chills, and fun surprises. From creepy haunted houses to spooky folklore, these films offer something for everyone. Whether it’s the laughs in Stree or the mystery in Bulbbul, there’s always a story to keep you hooked.

So, dim the lights, grab some snacks, and get ready for a scary good time with these movies!
